(... ) "The only light at the end of the tunnel in this otherwise gloomy Mozart anniversary year was the 10-CD set from German pianist Matthias Kirschnereit: the meticulously produced series, recorded over a period of seven years with the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra and conductor Frank Beermann, unites in a most eloquent manner the expressive possibilities of a modern concert grand with the tonal objectives of the master of historical performance practice – combining transparency, dramatic interaction and lively timbre.
The piano remains first among equals and never runs the risk, despite a sparkling non-legato touch, of sounding too perfect and polished, since Kirschnereit understands how to make each phrase part of a communication process between the piano and orchestra. His Mozart cycle represents the present musical benchmark when it comes to Mozart piano concertos, and it is a sign of hope that interpretational progress is still possible today in such protected niches, far away from the star performer circuit and even further from the intolerable Mozart roadshow we have had to tolerate in the past year (...)." |
