The Madison Symphony Orchestra's Friday night concert in Overture Hall had an excellent group of about 50 musicians playing extremely well, an excellent piano soloist, an excellent group of about 120 members of the Madison Symphony Chorus, and four excellent vocal soloists, in an all-Mozart program. The soloist in the piano concerto was Matthias Kirschnereit, a high-ranking Mozart interpreter of German heritage.
Kirschnereit distinguished himself with a polished, carefully shaped and flowing interpretation of the concerto. There was beauty of tone -- it is a wonderful piano -- and precise articulation of phrasing, even in the most rapid moments. This was a cool account, accompanied with warmth and decisiveness by Music Director John DeMain's orchestral forces. |
