Kirschnereit appears to have bridged the gap that often separates competition winners from successful careers as soloists. Breathing new life into well-known works is no easy task for a performer. There is always the risk of exaggeration and eccentricity with disastrous consequences.
On this occasion the soloist followed his own advice and the music spoke clearly. Kirschnereit, like many modern pianists, has more than enough technique to dazzle an audience. What makes him stand out from the crowd is his superb rhythmic sense that places each note in just the right place.
This special gift was apparent in the quasi-improvisational style used in Handel’s “Chaconne in G major” that opened the programme. Each phrase sparkled and danced delightfully.
The Beethoven “Sonate in C sharp minor Op 27, No 2” and Debussy’s “Images, Bk 1” were performed with sensitive attention to colour and dynamics. Kirschnereit is a master at shaping phrases and letting the music breathe. |
